As we do some thinking about how what we read inspires or influences what we write, I thought it might be fun for you to check out a website I've seen that analyzes a bit of your own writing and tells you what published author your writing is similar to.
I tried it with one of my blog posts and evidently I write like Dan Brown. I know who that is, but I haven't read any of his books. Interesting. I also found this interesting tidbit which confirmed my suspicions that there wasn't much heft to this particular tool, but hey...
Go to the ProProfs What Famous Writer Are You? quiz and try that one.
Leave a comment on this post telling us your results (and what you think of them) when you do. You might have to look up the author for more information if you don't recognize the name. The ProProfs quiz said I write like our very own Missouri native Mark Twain. Hmmm...

I write like Vladimir Nabokov. I honestly have no idea who they are
ReplyDeleteThe test said I was William Shakesphere
ReplyDeleteI write like Chuck Palahniuk
ReplyDeleteI am William Shakespeare
I got Cory Doctorow and I don't see it. He is a science fiction journalist and I put in a story about drugs and murder and then a story about demons crawling out of a cave and eating my mom. I don't get it
ReplyDeleteI write like David Foster Wallace, and I have no clue who this is. I also write like Mark Twain and I don't know how true that is.
ReplyDeleteI got Cory Doctorow he is a British Canadian.

ReplyDeleteI agreed with the I Write Like quiz more, or at least I guess it must be a more accurate interpretation of the similarities in my work. I wouldn't really know, because the I Write Like quiz says I write like an author named Ursula K. le guin, who I've never heard of nor read. I do know this, however: the proprofs quiz said I write like Hemingway and I can tell you now, no.
ReplyDeleteI got William Shakespeare
ReplyDeleteIt says I write like Sir Arthur Charles Clarke, He writes about futuristic stuff that is cool. A scifi fantasy write thgat really gets the ladies goin. Just like me.
ReplyDeleteThe quizzes said that I write similar to Raymond Chandler and C.S. Lewis, which is interesting because Raymond supposedly changed history of literature by a bit, and C.S. lewis was famous for writing Narnia, so it excites me to know that I am similar to such a well-known writer.
ReplyDeleteFrom the first quiz I got Cory Doctorow, who I don't really know who he is. And then the second quiz told me I was Ernest Hemingway. I've never really liked his works, so I can't quite see it.
ReplyDeleteAccording to ProProfs, I am Ernest Hemingway. Apparently I write like Raymond Chandler. Raymond Chandler was apparently a mystery writer, but I've never written mystery so I don't know how accurate that assessment is. I'm also not sure I write like Hemingway because I don't do vagueness.
ReplyDeleteThe "I Write Like" site said that I write the most like Stephen King, which I think is pretty cool. For the ProProfs quiz, it said I was William Shakespeare.
ReplyDeleteAccording to these websites, I write like Dan Brown and William Shakespeare. I haven't read Brown's The Davinci Code or Angels & Demons, but we both utilize religious themes. I don't think the Shakespeare result is very accurate.
ReplyDeleteFor the first link, I got Cory Doctorow. His writing style is majorly science fiction, which I differ from. Personality-wise, we are pretty similar, but I have yet to read any of his works so I'm not too sure what his writing structure is like.
ReplyDeleteThe second link told me that I'm like William Shakespeare. I'm honored that William and I were said in the same sentence, but I don't really see a correlation besides theatre and screen plays.
I was told by I Write Like that I write like Cory Doctorow.
ReplyDeleteThese websites say that I write like Cory Doctorow and C.S. Lewis. Cory Doctorow is a Canadian-British science fiction writer who is also a co-editor for a blog called Boing Boing, as to where C.S. Lewis is famous for writing fiction such as The Chronicles of Narnia. Lewis had opinions that he would get across with entertainment and humor, like me.
ReplyDeletethe first one wasnt very accurate, I had one British quote and it gave me a Arthur Clark. The other one gave me Mark Twain, which is one of my Dads most favorite authors
ReplyDeleteThe first link I got Chuck Palahniuk. His writing is more a transgressional fiction writer and a freelance writer I agree with the second part i'm more of a freelance writer it just depends how I feel that day. The second link stated that I write like Ernest Hemingway. I would say that this one I have to agree is because he's more of a introvert and so am I with being extreme shy at points in life.
ReplyDeleteApparently, I write like J.K. Rowling, which I find absolutely mind boggling. The Harry Potter series and books have always been a very big and favorite presence in my life, and to say I write like the author of such creations? Breathtaking. But that was for a piece that I don't even remember writing, so I tried again.
ReplyDeleteFor quite a few of my other pieces of work, I got James Joyce, author of "Ulysses," and influential Irish author from the early 1900's. Varying in literary style, most of his works seem to cover the daily life from different perspectives and such. I can see why my writing is reflective of his.
According to the I Write Like link, I write like Anne Rice, who is an author of gothic fiction and Christian literature. I am honestly surprised with this result because I have never thought of myself as a gothic writer, nor am I interested in writing supernatural or horror fiction. For the ProProfs quiz, I write like Ernest Hemingway. Although he is an author I am more familiar with, I also don't understand why I got this result as well because most of his works are realistic fiction, which in my opinion isn't the best or worst genre.
ReplyDeleteApperantly I write like Agatha Christie.
ReplyDeleteI write like Arthur Clarke. I don't know who that is.
ReplyDeleteI write like Ernest Hemingway and Arthur Clarke
ReplyDeleteMakayla Maxheimer:
ReplyDeleteI currently write like Anne Rice. I looked through her books and her writing style, and while it definitely fits my style I really don't like either her style or my style. I suppose I'm a bit too picky in my work and in others, but I hope to articulate my thoughts better in the future so things don't get misdirected or out of hand like they sometimes do in Anne Rice's books.
Apparently I write like david foster wallace, I don't know who that is.
ReplyDeleteI was told by IWL that I write like David Foster Wallace, and after reading an excerpt from his most famous piece "Infinite Jest", I believe this to be true. We both write in very descriptive sentences and use the same time stance, if that makes any sense. We write as if the events we are detailing are occurring right now.
ReplyDeleteI was also told that I write like Shakespeare, I don't know that that is true, because his writing is very old fashioned, so maybe we do write similarly, but it is hard to tell because of the gap in time.
