Blackout

Thanks for trying the newspaper and book page blackout technique (scientific terminology there) in class Tuesday. Please share at least one of your blackout text pieces as a COMMENT on this post.

You could type the text you left on the page as a sentence or poem or story.  You could also take a picture with your phone and post your work that way on your own blog, but that is optional.

I'm thinking you could do this same technique with any printed material containing a good chunk of text to work with. I also think you could be inspired to write all sorts of other pieces by using your blacked out piece as a starting point.

You could visit Austin Kleon's website to see what others have come up with and even post your own work there if you're up for it.

  1. "Black holes, devouring the light
    Blink: He's gone
    The foreverness of death
    Teetering between two worlds
    flesh and air
    bone and dust
    we never fully die
the matter we assume just changes
    we become minerals
    layers of sediment
    food for plnts
    for sun
    for air
    if we did not die
and our bodies did not melt into the earth
there would be no more life

When I'm finished, I'm not me
    I shiver
    Juliet--
    resurrected
    brand new"

  6. She was breathless.
I felt a stir of panic rise inside my throat. This was not going to end well.
She was hanging upside by her knees.
I thought about calling for help, but I found myself helpless.

  7. The shot came
He was pawing through the tool chest, his teeth clicking metal.
He caught the slight separation, the overlapping echoes
and his brain, so conditioned to gunfire,
two shots, with only a half-second's separation
He was nearly out the door when he caught himself
Whatever's happened has already gone down.
Two shots, three possibilities: two shooters, both firing
    At virtually the same moment

and lungs that couldn't seem to get enough air
all I could think about was
    the crashing of my heart
I stumble to spare myself from the darkness

    her instead of
Amy stopped several feet away from her
"Do you love her?" she asked.
    I wasn't embarrassed by how I felt.
    I didn't move.
After a long moment, she lifted her eyes to me
    Not yet. Right now
she said that you were too quiet and strange, That
    you couldn't be

    thought They
felt like not belonging to my
body. watching me, gauging my reaction.
    I knew I wanted to
    smile. But then--
    where is she?"

  13. pulling and pulling again
    some darker heart twists
where the moon steered the dark
in the whisper with the pull

    left in the wake
    of upstream
the way to the current of downstream home

    for the darkness
had ever drifted down moonlit river
had wondered the snow like frozen tears

    dark silhouettes lived
    where the world and dead
    bent, parted, stopped,and
the moon wished from the current gray riverbank

  16. Lungs emptied all at once. I'd hit water. No up or down, just blackness. Coating my mouth and skin. So cold. Just a symptom in this blackness. I felt it oozing down my cheeks from my hair. I felt like I was in the middle of the earth. I was so cold.

It was pulling at me, I couldn't swim forever. I half swam, reaching out. There must be a way out of this. My stomach twisted inside me. The sides stretched up and away from me, endless.

I could cry for help, but no one would hear me.

Dragging me by my left arm
    Too exhausted now to resist

  18. "My grandfather's brother? I thought he was dead."
"Wait, I get it. It's not dead-dead, Chris. It's dead, as in excommunicated."
    "you're a Yeager," Lena said.
Nathan said. "Yeager is German for 'hunter.'
It would explain some of their customs, how cult-like the village was.
Why would this even be a secret?
